Prepare to be awed as you drive up to this Metairie listing at 3715 Chardonnay. The house itself is an elegant dusty rose with wide stone steps and a bumped-out dining room. There’s no grass to cut in the front, but plenty of vegetation and cobble stones lending themselves to plenty of parking. Plus, it’s located right on Lake Pontchartrain.
“This house is a beautiful, well-maintained lake front property,” said listing agent Meade Phelps, with RE/MAX Affiliates, “and it has a fantastic view of Lake Pontchartrain from its third-floor master suite.”
Walking around to the rear, you’ll see another bumped-out room to match the one in the front – but this one has floor-to-ceiling windows giving you a beautiful view of the pool and spa. “There are double-insulated vinyl windows for energy savings,” said Phelps, “plus a large pool surrounded by cool decking and an outdoor grill area.”
French doors are included to the pool and there’s even a wrought iron fenced in area for entertaining or keeping the kids dry. This area is another surprise: It’s a complete outdoor kitchen with a sit-at bar – perfect for crawfish boils or grilling. The view from here is stunning – palm trees frame the levee which offers complete privacy.
The living room and dining room areas are at the back of the house, and it’s easy to imagine pool parties with plenty of people in and out enjoying plenty of food and drink. These rooms are floored in easy-to-wipe up ceramic tile, so guests coming in from the pool with wet bathing suits would not be a problem. The kitchen is also floored in ceramic and is crisp and clean-looking with white counters and black granite counter tops.
“This is such a convenient, serene location,” noted Phelps, “and the house is priced under its appraised value.”
Metairie is the first suburb of New Orleans and the largest community in Jefferson Parish. between the city and Kenner, where the Louis Armstrong International Airport is located. In the 1720s French explorers became the first Europeans to settle in the area known today as Metairie Ridge, a natural levee formed by an ancient branch of the Mississippi River which flowed through present-day River Ridge, Metairie, Gentilly and New Orleans East. Native Americans used this ridge as a road; it was paved in the 1920s and now known as Metairie Road.
An electric streetcar was installed along this road in the late 1910s and housing tracts began to be built in the 1920s. The land between Metairie Ridge and Lake Pontchartrain, which was cypress swamps and marshlands, was eventually drained with the Wood pump and Metairie’s population grew in the 1940s as a result of cheaper land, lower taxes, and larger lots than in Orleans Parish.
The name Metairie is the French term for a small tenant farm. In the 1760s, many of the original French farmers were tenants; after the American Civil War, the majority of the community’s inhabitants were sharecroppers until the urbanization of the area began in the 1910s.
Veterans Boulevard was laid out alongside a drainage canal, and became a commercial center of the region. The Central Business District of Metairie is on Causeway Boulevard near Lake Pontchartrain; Lakeside Shopping Center, located here, is the highest-grossing mall in the New Orleans metropolitan area. Metairie also has a large Mardi Gras season that touts itself as more family-friendly than the New Orleans Mardi Gras.
Jefferson Parish has created many parks in Metairie and many of these playgrounds have organized sports leagues such as football, baseball, and basketball. Some of them also have other programs, such as low cost piano lessons. Since 1997, Metairie has also been the home of the New Orleans Zephyrs baseball team at Zephyr Field.
