The other attractive feature is that lots of homes near the lake flooded during Hurricane Katrina, so they’ve been completely rebuilt – higher and sturdier with all new wiring, plumbing and construction.
That’s the case with 6161 West End Boulevard. It’s been completely rebuilt from the ground up, so that even though it appears to be an old New Orleans home, it has all the features of new construction.
“This neighborhood is so convenient to everything,” said listing agent Thelma Miller, who’s been in the real estate business for 32 years and is an agent with Century 21 Richard Berry. “You have the convenient walking and biking trail right in front of your house, you can get to the heart of Metairie quickly, or hop on either I-610 or I-10 to get to the airport or Uptown.”

Long ago the Lakeview area was owned by Capuchin priests who later sold it to Don Almonester y Roxas, the wealthy developer who paid to rebuild the St. Louis Cathedral and Cabildo after they were destroyed by fire.
There was a West End resort in the 1800’s, but the land between New Orleans and the resort was mostly uninhabited. In the early 1900’s, the land was drained and the Lakeview area started to become a neighborhood.
The New Basin Canal, built in the 1830’s by mostly Irish immigrants, ran down the middle of West End Boulevard and brought goods from the lake to the American Sector (now the CBD) in downtown New Orleans. Due to the rise of railroads, the canal was filled in the late 1930’s and today has houses, a walking path and several areas of landscaping.
The Lakeview neighborhood got more than its share of water in the flooding after Hurricane Katrina, but it’s looking back to normal these days. Neighbors and neighborhood organizations have worked diligently to fix it physically and revive the Lakeview neighborhood spirit.
Some homes in Lakeview have a suburban feel, some are big and elaborate and some are of eclectic historic New Orleans architecture. There are many old homes with above-ground basements, a walk-up to the front door and many blocks have a mix of old and new. There are also many large houses available next to smaller homes in some areas.
Lakeview residents were bullish on New Orleans and were determined to get their neighborhood back after the Katrina destruction. They are among the biggest boosters of New Orleans.
