Homes in the Charlestowne section of Santa Maria are not your typical Santa Maria residences with big lots and yards. The home at 19839 Southern Hills Ave. is a tall Old Charlestowne style offering with influences from New Orleans. It backs up to Ward’s Creek and offers downsizers a luxurious alternative.
There are three separate and really useable outdoor spaces around this home – more than you’d expect from a 2,651-square-foot, three-bedroom residence.
The first outdoor space is the grandest: A beautiful, breezy fountain courtyard that serves as the home’s main entrance, accessible from the driveway by a tall set of double doors.
The second outdoor retreat is the
veranda above, which supplies an
excellent view of the courtyard.
And finally, the third is a private porch behind the master suite with wooded views near Ward’s Creek.
A set of double doors in the fountain courtyard is the actual entrance to the home, and it leads right into the living room. Main parts of the house go left from there.
Hardwood floors much of the home’s first level. In the living room, a fireplace to the right is surrounded by Botticino marble tile and topped with a painted mantle. To the right is a corner entertainment center, and on the far wall is a stairway that runs past the 11-foot ceiling up to the second floor.
Heading left into the long, tall home, the kitchen and dining area is next. The dining room, floored in more hardwood, has a huge wall of windows to the fountain courtyard, 32 lights in all.
A two-level bar topped with granite tile separates the kitchen from the dining area.
In the kitchen, appliances are GE Profile, including a 5-burner gas cook top and a microwave above an oven. The dishwasher is Bosch, and it’s next to a double stainless sink in the bar.
Separating the kitchen from the master suite at the back of the home is a wide anteroom that is being used by the current owner as an office. There’s a built in desk along the left wall, but it can be closed off by louvered doors.
In the master suite, the carpeted bedroom is large – nearly 19 x 16 feet. There’s also an exit to the private porch and back yard.
And if you’ve ever worried about someone building some monstrosity behind your home, there are no worries here.
The master bath has a whirlpool tub below glass blocks. Two vanities with custom mirrors are separated by the bath’s entrance, and a big closet with a light-switched door wraps around on the left side. A double walk-in shower with a frameless glass wall is to the right.
The home’s laundry room, powder room and exit to the two-car garage are at the other end of the residence behind the kitchen.
“It’s a good floor plan,” said Dolly McKenney, the RE/MAX First agent marketing the home. The home also has solid 8-foot interior doors, two air conditioning units, three attic spaces, surround sound and “storage galore,” McKenney said.
Meanwhile, there are two bedrooms upstairs, and each one has its own full bath. Bedroom No. 2 also has the exit to the wide veranda above the fountain courtyard.
All three of the home’s outdoor spaces are big enough to actually be usable, and entertaining would be a breeze in this home.
But don’t take our word for it; the home will be kept open this afternoon from 2-4 p.m.
You’ll get to see what “downsized luxury” looks like in the beautiful Charlestowne section of Santa Maria.
