Cottage Charm in University Gardens

Elegant old houses are often more beautiful than functional when it comes to modern spaces and conveniences, but elegant new houses built to look old can have their cake and eat it too. Such is the case with the tall country cottage at 2252 Myrtledale Ave. in University Gardens…see page 5.

Elegant old houses are often more beautiful than functional when it comes to modern spaces and conveniences, but elegant new houses built to look old can have their cake and eat it too. Such is the case with the tall country cottage at 2252 Myrtledale Ave. in University Gardens. The builder designed and built the home with the charm and character of a plantation cottage from the late 1800s, but he built it just four years ago. With a large kitchen and master bath – two things generally lacking in old homes – the Myrtledale residence just looks like it stepped out of the last century.

The front entrance opens in typical plantation cottage style with a wide wood foyer that extends through arched passageways to the home’s rear wall. A custom wood staircase leads from the foyer up the right wall to the second floor, an iron chandelier lighting the way. Rooms on the left and right sides of the foyer in a plantation home would possibly be a parlor and a bedroom. Here, it’s a formal dining room to the left and an office (or nursery) to the right.

The formal dining hall has large wood windows and wainscoted walls with tall baseboards, two more thoughtful touches from days gone by. A 10-light chandelier hangs overhead, and a wide cased entry leads to the kitchen. Heavy 3cm granite tops the counters in this clean bright kitchen, and the glass-front cabinetry is painted white. A split-level bar with an icemaker and a stainless prep sink separates the kitchen from the living room. The refrigerator and 5-burner gas cook top are GE Profile, something they didn’t have back in the days of “iceboxes” and kitchen fire coves. The kitchen also has a stainless dishwasher and an undermount sink.

If you step out into the living room from the kitchen and look right, you’ll be looking back up towards the foyer through a wide arched entryway with a powder room on one side and the laundry room on the other. The living room also has heart pine flooring that echoes hollow when heels cross. Tall windows and French doors offer views of the back porch and fenced yard.

The master bedroom, meanwhile, is to the right of the living room. This is a large sanctuary, also with pine floors and French doors to the back porch. Two more windows line the headboard wall, and a tall wood door leads to the master bath. Two marble vanities – hers with a makeup desk – are across from a white slipper tub situated below a big frosted window. A large corner shower has seamless glass, and the single large closet is at the end of the bath.

Two bedrooms are upstairs, and both have their own private full bath – no tub sharing is required up here. A surprisingly large upstairs den is at the landing, and French doors lead out to a wide veranda with views of the big back yard as well the neighbors’. Also, there’s plenty of room for a pool back here. Wood-floored verandas are commonplace in old homes, but no gray floor paint will be needed here. This wide veranda has a stained concrete floor and two gas lamps, as well as a unique arbor roof that extends from the ceiling. A stucco and iron fence crosses the back of the property, and the two-car garage is to the left.

The home is located on the upper end of Myrtledale Avenue, right at Perkins Road. That makes it a very short walk to the Acme Oyster House and other great restaurants.
