Advocate story Comments At one Baton Rouge summer camp, there’s no swimming, sports or crafts. Only rock ’n’ roll. For one week, young musicians at the Young Band Nation camp pool their talents. They jam together, learn a few songs, develop chemistry and pick a band name, all leading to a gig at the week’s end. “It’s performance based, sink or swim,” says Doug Gay, owner and director of Baton Rouge Music Studios, which runs the camp. “That’s where you learn to improvise. That teaches things they could never learn otherwise.” When the campers arrive on the first day, the directors have already placed them in to bands based on their ages and abilities. They start playing songs right away. On the third day of camp at the Music Studios location on Bluebonnet Boulevard, the band that will become The Elemental 5 practices “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles.
