Exotic blooms for the masses

You want orchids? The Baton Rouge Orchid Society has the show and sale for you.

This year’s theme is “Exotic Orchids,” and unlike other shows where flowers stand in a vase or pot, these orchids will be arranged into tropical displays and exhibits to resemble natural habitats or to showcase the theme. Flowers and displays will be judged by certified judges from the American Orchid Society. Several plants will be raffled, with winners selected at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon.

Experts from the society will answer your questions, advise on purchases and offer all of their orchid know-how.

Commercial vendors from across the Gulf Coast will have for sale a wide variety of orchids, from seedlings to those near blooming.

New this year is the “Kiddie Korner,” where youngsters can find out about growing orchids.

Potting demonstrations will be held every two hours, and you’re invited to bring a plant — one per person — to get a lesson from a member of the society, which will provide the supplies.
