Advocate story June 07, 2014 Comments St. Michael’s band earns Disney awards At its April 29 spring concert, the St. Michael High School Band celebrated awards the band earned at Festival Disney. The concert band earned Best in Class in its division, and the jazz ensemble earned a superior rating and a Bronze Mickey — the prize for earning the third-highest score among the 6,000 student performers. Junior Lindsey Ellis was recognized as an outstanding soloist and earned Mickey Awards for her flute and piccolo playing. Law firm holds party for BHGH graduates Adams and Reese sponsored an open house for the Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baton Rouge graduates Mar’Kia Capers and Joshua Shepard on May 17. Adams and Reese attorney Melissa Grand serves as the president and chair of BHGH Baton Rouge, and Adams and Reese Baton Rouge Regional Office Manager Kristen Viator serves as the new junior board chair. The law firm helps BHGH hold quarterly events that have included school supplies and backpack drives, picnic table projects, Bowl for Hope, laser tag and luncheon, basketball tournament, and a pizza and Xbox night. Area students awarded Politz Scholarships Three area high school students have been named winners of the 2014 Associated Grocers-Sam S. Politz Scholarship. These scholarships are valued at $1,000 per semester for eight semesters. Receiving the scholarships are Hira Hasan, of Geismar; Peyton Joffrion, of Donaldsonville; and Jacqueline Odom, of Zachary. Hasan is the daughter of Azeem and Farhana Hasan. She attended Dutchtown High School, where she held a 4.73 GPA and ranked first in her graduating class of 441. She was Dutchtown High School Student of the Year in 2013 and Ascension Parish Student of the Year in 2014. She has been active in the Interact Club, National Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Student Council, National Honors Society and Louisiana Youth Advisory Council. Extracurricular activities include the National Art Honors Society and volunteering at local medical facilities and businesses with the Volunteer Ascension “ConnecTeens” program. She will major in biology at LSU. Odom is the daughter of James and Kelley Odom. She graduated from Zachary High School with a 4.60 cumulative GPA and ranked sixth in her graduating class of 349. She excelled in honors and advanced placement classes and has been on the honor roll and principal’s list each of her four years at ZHS, with two academic letters, and this year she was chosen to represent ZHS in the Louisiana Student of the Year competition. She finished second in the oratory completion at the 2013 National Beta Convention, was Student Government Association president her senior year and served as captain of the 2013 Mock Trial Team which competed in the National High School Mock Trial Championship. She was a member of the varsity volleyball and golf teams. Odom will major in political science at LSU. Joffrion is the son of Thomas and Holly Joffrion. He graduated from Ascension Catholic High School at the top of his class with a GPA of 4.20. He was National Honor Society president, on the Honor Roll of Excellence and received individual subject awards, the St. Michael’s College Book Award and Cross Country Academic All-State Team. He also participated in baseball, basketball and golf. His community involvement included altar server at St. Jules Catholic Church, annually volunteering at St. Jules Catholic Church Allons Manger Food Festival, preparing Thanksgiving baskets for the needy, and Eucharistic minister at Ascension Catholic Church. He will major in engineering at Louisiana Tech University. Bonnabel Class of ’79 sets multiyear reunion The Bonnabel High School Class of 1979 will hold a multi-class reunion from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at The Rose Garden in Harahan.
