Younger achievers from area schools

Among the younger students competing for Student of the Year honors from southeast Louisiana are:

Logan Berthelot

Eighth grade, 13 (turns 14 on April 17)

SCHOOL: Brusly Middle School, Brusly

PARENTS: Donny and Maria Berthelot

FAVORITE SUBJECT: English.

“Out of everyone I have competed against up to this point, the interviewers chose me, of all people,” Berthelot said. “I had a one-in-18 chance of getting up to this point, and I succeeded. I feel quite honored to be in the position I am in. The pressure is on now. A West Baton Rouge Parish Student of the Year has never won at the state level, and I could be the first … I only hope that I can win now!”

Kevell Byrd

Fifth grade, age 11

SCHOOL: Luling Elementary School, Luling.

PARENTS: Kevin and Shantrell Byrd

FAVORITE SUBJECTS: Music, band

“I am grateful that I was awarded Student of the Year for my school, district and region because my heart’s desire is to be president of the United States,” Byrd said. “It gives me a great sense of accomplishment knowing that I have reached such a tremendous and historical goal academically at my elementary school.”

Mathilde Fox-Smith

Fifth grade, age 10 (turns 11 on April 17)

SCHOOL: Bains Elementary School, St. Francisville

PARENTS: James and Ashley Fox-Smith

FAVORITE SUBJECTS: English and social studies

“I suppose I could say that I dreamed that I would get this far, but I couldn’t imagine how it would feel afterwards. It is simply thrilling,” said Fox-Smith. “I am so grateful to everyone who has encouraged me — my family, friends and teachers. Even if I don’t make it all the way, I’ll always be honored to be a part of this, to represent my school and to say that I’ve experienced that feeling.”

Charles Roemer V

Fifth grade, age 11

SCHOOL: Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School, Baton Rouge

PARENTS: Tena and Chas Roemer

FAVORITE SUBJECT: Math

“It felt like I had just won a soccer tournament or made the winning three-pointer with seconds to go,” Roemer said. “I am proud that I was chosen to represent my school!”

Rebekah Travis

Eighth grade, age 14

SCHOOL: Mount Carmel Academy, New Orleans

PARENT: Marcia Travis

FAVORITE SUBJECTS: Latin, algebra I and physical science.

“I am thankful because I have had the opportunity to know and be influenced by many different people. I know I would not be the person I am today had it not been for those influences,” Travis said. “This has been an adventure in itself. I only hope that I am able to represent my mom and other mentors who have helped me get this far.”
