The food team’s Best of the Best lineup once again includes lagniappe. There were simply too many great recipes in the 2013 food pages to limit the choices to a dozen.

We started the Best of the Best by honoring 12 of the best local recipes that readers rave about during the year, that Advocate columnists made for themselves at home, and that we thought reflected the best of what south Louisiana residents were cooking during the year.

We limit the Best of the Best selections to dishes featured January through November since the December recipes are fresh on everyone’s mind. Even so, we found there were more than 12 outstanding dishes to brag about. We selected 15 recipes but could have added many more.

Among the recipes we are celebrating are those that take advantage of Louisiana’s abundant seafood. Others are adaptations of tried-and-true family recipes and others are perfect for serving at parties.

We thank the wonderful cooks who make The Advocate’s Best of the Best possible, and we hope our readers enjoy trying all of these recipes in the new year.
