Air Force Association welcomes ROTC cadets
The Baton Rouge Chapter of the Air Force Association welcomed the new members of the LSU Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps special elite unit called the Arnold Air Society at the Sept. 17 AFA meeting.
The new members are referred to as the “Jet Jocks” and undergo a rigorous program to qualify for this group of cadets who have expressed a desire to get the most out of their Air Force careers. The Baton Rouge Chapter has supported cadets since it began in 1992.
The chapter meets monthly at the Great Wall Restaurant. Each meeting features a guest speaker or an aviation related video along with reports on cadet activities and the latest in active duty Air Force activities and aircraft. For information, call Phil Jones, (225) 769-7118.
Louisiana movies topic for Alpha Lambda event
Christopher Stelly, executive director of Louisiana Entertainment, a division of the Louisiana Economic Development department, spoke about the movie industry in Louisiana when Alpha Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of key women teachers met on Sept. 18 at Not Your Mama’s restaurant in Livonia.
Alpha Lambda collected math manipulative toys to donate to schools in need as part of a state project.
Myrna Tuminello and Cindy Guidroz decorated tables with fall decorations. Janet Vosburg, Carol St. Romain, Linda D’Amico, Bridget Berry and Donna Langlois donated raffle items. Betsy Stafford introduced transfer member Peggy King.
LASM producer speaks to Photographic Society
Louisiana Art and Science Museum producer-animator Kyra Elliott spoke to the Louisiana Photographic Society about planetarium techniques on Sept. 19.
Elliott showed examples of stills, videos, animation and time-lapse photography as she explained how she prepares 360-degree visuals for the LASM dome.
In the monthly competition, first-place winners were Earl Arboneaux in Category A, Bill Lane in Category B and Cathy Smart for black and white. Treasurer Ray Totty noted membership increased by five to 176. Linda Medine reported on guest speakers she has confirmed for April’s regional conference. Ken Wilson listed upcoming field trips. President Gene Bachman reminded members to bring a friend to the annual October recruitment meeting, this year featuring veteran award-winning photographer David Humphreys. Alkadi recognized by Sigma Alpha Lambda
Ghassan “J.C.” Alkadi of Denham Springs has been recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization at Southeastern Louisiana University. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.
Pickard receives Army Achievement Medal
Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Christopher L. Pickard has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal.
The medal is awarded to Army personnel who distinguish themselves by meritorious service or achievement while serving in a combat or non-combat area.
Pickard is a squad leader assigned to the Charlie Company, 3-156 Infantry Regiment at Crowley in the Louisiana National Guard. He has served in the military for 14 years.
He is the son of Alton L. Pickard and Billie D. Covington, both of Baton Rouge.
Stewart graduates from Army basic training
Army Pvt. Tyran T. Stewart has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Stewart is the son of Cherry Stewart and nephew of Mary Stewart, both of Baton Rouge, and is a 2010 graduate of Tara High School.
Thomas graduates from Army basic training
Army National Guard Pfc. Tyreion M. Thomas has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Shawanda Thomas and stepdaughter of Wayne Netter, both of Baton Rouge, and is a 2012 graduate of McKinley Senior High School.
Alexander completes Army basic training
Army National Guard Pvt. Carroll K. Alexander has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Carroll Alexander of Baton Rouge and is a 2012 graduate of Capitol High School.
