Historical club learns about State Archives
Bill Stafford spoke about historical collections housed at the Louisiana State Archives when the Edward Livingston Historical Association met on June 20.
Stafford said collections include such military records as Confederate pension applications, Union Civil War volunteers from Louisiana, World War I and World War II records and Confederate pension applications of African-American soldiers; land records, maps, images, and old birth and death records. The State Archives, 3851 Essen Lane, is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For information, call (225) 922-1196 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tom Davidson will speak about the development of Hammond, including its fair ground with a horse track that doubled as an airport, when the club meets at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Livingston Parish Library in Livingston.
‘Reflections’ speaker discusses succulents
Severn Doughty, of Mansfield, a retired Department of Agriculture Extension Service agent and horticulture expert, spoke to the Burden Horticulture Society “Reflections in the Garden” program on July 1.
Having collected and researched agave and yucca succulent plants, he recommended using succulents in dry landscapes with lots of direct sun, since they withstand hot sun and don’t have to be watered once they are established. By keeping records of his plants and temperatures they have survived, he developed a list of succulent plants and their cold hardiness. He explained how he made his beds and showed photos of his beds and plants in bloom.
Tim Chapman will speak on “Gingers: Foliage, Fragrance and Flowers for Sale” at the Aug. 5 “Reflections” program at the LSU AgCenter Burden Conference Center, 4560 Essen Lane. The BHS is a nonprofit organization supporting LSU AgCenter’s Burden Center. Its website is burdenhorticulturesociety.com.
