Advocate story June 27, 2013 Comments Flower Show Judges elect 2013-15 officers The Eighth District Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judges elected 2013-15 officers at its May 8 meeting in Marksville. They are President Nancy Miller, of Grant Parish; Vice President Patti Killen, Rapides Parish; Recording Secretary Sherill Laborde, Avoyelles Parish; Corresponding Secretary Kate Moreau, Avoyelles Parish; Treasurer Laura Murchinson, Rapides Parish; and Parliamentarian Barbara Coates, West Carroll Parish. Virginia Webb, of Natchitoches Parish, is past president. Council members holding other offices are Yvette Hebert, State Garden Club president; Carla Gauthier, State Judges Council president; and Killen, State Garden Club first vice president. Lupus support group has ‘Purple’ theme The Louisiana Lupus Foundation’s Baton Rouge support group participated in “Put on Purple for Lupus Awareness” by wearing purple shirts for its May 18 meeting. Sharon Johnson, former president and member of the Baton Rouge group, spoke on “The Stages of Loss of Health,” which can include the loss of job, relationship or even identity. Members shared their own experiences of navigating through the stages of loss. The support group meets from noon to 3 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at the East Baton Rouge Parish Delmont Gardens Branch Library, 3351 Lorraine St. Antique bottles topic for last BSP meeting Ruth Mannen led a program about antique liqueur bottles when the Laureate Alpha Gamma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its final meeting of the season May 21 at Mannen’s home. The bottles were collected from airline flights during the 1930s through the 1960s and inherited from her father-in-law. Some were ornate in design and made of ceramic, as well as glass from France, Germany, Scotland, the West Indies and the United States. New President Page Meyer led a discussion of activities planned for the fall. Social Chairwoman Jean Leyda said that outgoing President Phyllis Turner will receive her scrapbook from the chapter at a social in August. A weekend trip to Pearlington, Miss., for “Beginning Day” is also scheduled in August. The “Club News” column runs every Tuesday and Wednesday, and Friday as needed, in The Advocate.
