Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER: Jimmy Burland, 58, business and industry lobbyist and owner of Burland and Associates, a law practice and governmental relations firm, and chairman of the Baton Rouge Greek Festival.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “‘New’ Jimi Hendrix, anything John Mayer, Connie Mims (an old friend and folk musician/songwriter) and Maroon 5. Also, lots of news talk radio when I’m driving, but I also (listen to) The Coffee House on Sirius.”
WHAT I’M READING: “The Advocate every morning, of course! And several national political journals and blogs daily to keep up with the ebb and flow of state and national politics.”
WHAT I’M WATCHING: “‘The Americans’ on FX, ‘Shark Tank’ and live singing shows like ‘Idol’ and ‘The Voice.’ I enjoy movie comedies and good sci-fi or Bond films. I have recently fallen in love with ‘Antiques Roadshow’ on PBS, of all programs!”
WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “The state legislative website is always ‘on,’ so I can listen to live debate and watch floor votes at http://www.legis.la.gov. As a festival chairman, I’m always searching restaurant supply and kitchen equipment sites to find used items!”
WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? “Actually, a rare ‘date night’ with my wife, Panay, for dinner and a movie! Or a quick nap on the couch on the weekends, or both! Keep me away from jalapeno Cheetos or pistachios, or I’ll eat the whole bag!”
What is your favorite Greek tradition? “The Baton Rouge Greek Festival, of course! Please join us on Saturday, May 11, in Town Square — it’s free and you can learn to Greek dance, eat authentic Greek food and help us raise funds for local charities!”
