Advocate story April 26, 2013 Comments Music Club Chorus has Gershwin recital The Baton Rouge Music Club Chorus performed “Lights, Camera, Gershwin!” for the Music Club of Baton Rouge on March 12 at the Woman’s Club. Marjorie Blocker was director, Terry Byars was artistic director and Les LeBlanc handled the sound. Louis Wendt, piano, and Kim Sands, cello, provided the accompaniment. Heath Watson was narrator. Songs included “Swanee,” “Strike Up the Band,” “Summertime,” “The Man I Love,” “O Lady Be Good,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Embraceable You.” Soloists were Hots Aull, Curtis Lauret, Katy Pean, Heath Watson, Kathy Rageur, Cynda Barfield, Charlotte Paulsen, Louis Wendt, Roger Travasos, Pat Lindsay, Wesley McCoy, Martha Thornhill, Lois Holloway and Mary Farris. Randy Smith was program chairman. Hospitality was provided by Co-chairwomen Diane Lynch and Linda Henning, assisted by Jackie Aull, Miriam Bensman, Dot Harman, Mary Lou Hutchinson, Ruth Patrick, Rita Satawa, Barbara Sims, Jessie Mulkey, Betty Robertson and Cheryl Hall. Rose of Montana topic for Gardenettes Adrienne Dunn spoke about the Rose of Montana to the Gardenettes garden club of Ponchatoula on March 13 at President Dale Rieth’s home. The presentation included childhood memories of the vine, along with methods to grow it. Kathy Bruce announced that Robin Austin, 180 Grove St., won Garden of the Month. Kathy Bedenbaugh announced that the Knights of Columbus received the Genesis Award for beautification of a business. Rieth gave an update on the club’s progress with the Butterfly Garden in Kiwanis Park. The club is preparing a list of needed items to use the $1,500 in funds donated by Councilman Melvin Toomer. Joan Morse and Dunn won blue ribbons for their horticulture specimens, which included camellias, snowflakes and Carolina jessamine. Austin showed how to transfer dye from flowers onto fabric or paper to create beautiful artwork. Hostesses were Rieth, Bedenbaugh, Joan Morse and Louise Steadman. The Gardenettes club is a member of Louisiana Garden Club Federation District VI and the Deep South Region of National Garden Clubs.
