“Style File” column for Feb. 19, 2013

NAME: Sherri McKay

AGE: 49

OCCUPATION: “I used to be a dental hygienist; now I’m a busy mom and wife.”

Tell us about what you’re wearing. (McKay was spotted at the Baton Rouge Symphony’s Great Performers in Concert event featuring Diana Ross.) “A Rachel Zoe red tuxedo from nk Boutique and, over it, the red coat I wore when I portrayed Diana Ross in the Krewe of Achilles Mardi Gras Ball a few years ago (2009). I got it and a red sequined dress online. I was originally going to wear the dress too but it is so heavy that I opted to wear the pantsuit because it’s much more comfortable.”

What’s the best fashion advice you’ve ever gotten? “Don’t be afraid to take chances. If it doesn’t work out, don’t wear it again. I tend to dress for my mood; I’m a bit of a chameleon. I like to try different things.”

What’s your favorite trend right now? “I’m loving all the leggings with boots, and fur — especially the fur accessories.”

Finish this sentence. I splurge on ... “Shoes.”

I skimp on... “I don’t know – belts? I’m a big belt person.”

Are you a shoe or handbag kind of woman? “Shoes, definitely.”

How many pairs do you own? “Let’s just say a lot. I don’t want to incriminate myself.”

Name a celebrity whose closet you’d like to raid. “Jennifer Lopez.”

What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without? “ YSL’s (Yves Saint Laurent) Touche Éclat concealer.”

What was your worst fashion mistake? “Let me think — I can’t claim just one. When you take fashion risks, more mistakes are involved.”

Your house is on fire and you can grab only one thing out of your closet; what would it be? “The first thing I’d probably grab would be my robe and slippers so I wouldn’t scare the firemen. I’m not really attached to things but, of sentimental things, a photo of my family.”
