Middle East topic for Republican Women
Retired Col. Phil St. Amant spoke about America’s relationship with the Middle East when the Republican Women of Baton Rouge met on Jan. 23 at Café Americain.
First Vice President Emily Domingue introduced Megan Joy Rials, recipient of the club’s Wanda Aizpurua Scholarship. Rials is a junior at LSU majoring in political science.
The club installed officers at its Christmas party: Jane St. Amant, president; Domingue, first vice president; Angie Jones, second vice president; Cathy Childers, corresponding secretary; Dina Leon, treasurer; Lauren Barrios, recording secretary; and Pam Myers, chaplain.
Calif. bonsai expert leads workshop
Ben Oki, Huntington Bonsai Collection curator in San Marino, Calif., led an advanced bonsai workshop for the Louisiana Bonsai Society meeting on Jan. 22.
Oki has been doing bonsai since 1958, and studied under and worked with John Naka, known as the “Father of American Bonsai.”
Oki, world-renowned expert known for his freeform style and fine bonsai detail work, refined the design of many club members’ bonsai.
Lawrence LeClaire, president of the Azalea City Bonsai Society in Mobile, Ala., led the sixth annual Mid-Winter Bonsai Workshop on Jan. 19. He is a past president of the San Francisco Bonsai Society and was the editor of their bonsai newsletter for years. LBS sponsors a mid-winter workshop each year to assist bonsai club members with improving their collections by a hands-on workshop assisted by an expert and the exchange of ideas, materials and supplies.
The results from these workshops can be seen at the LBS Bonsai Show, April 20- 21, at the Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd. Admission is free. LBS will have a booth at the Baton Rouge Spring Garden Show sponsored by the LSU Horticulture Department, March 9-10, at the LSU Parker Coliseum.
