PLAQUEMINE — Le Krewe du Roi turned the Carl F. Grant Civic Center into a tropical paradise, complete with palm trees and tiki huts, for its 49th annual Mardi Gras ball Feb. 9.
With a theme of “Ports of Paradise,” the tableau followed the King of Spain’s best conquistadors as they searched for his majesty’s desired treasure, the fountain of youth.
Reigning over the evening were King Roi XLIX Ralph Comeaux Jr. and the Fountain of Youth, Queen Roi XLIX Gabrielle Olive Dupont, daughter of Charles Denis’ and Eva Dupont.
His majesty arrived on a wave, accompanied by his royal attendants, grandchildren Kaci and Emily Comeaux, Ali Falcon, and William and Brayden Gremillion.
The queen was framed by a gazebo with her attendants, Lilla Aucoin, Layla and Danae Brown, Emily Engolio, Brady and Landon Martinez, and Lilah Morgan. The royal pair wore matching trains made of gold silk that carried out the theme. The king’s was decorated with the crest of Spain and the queen’s with a bronze fountain.
Master of ceremonies John Morgan opened the tableau with the presentation of the 2012 royal court and the 2013 ball captains. Serving as ball captains were Huey and Tammy Martinez, and Wade and Crystal Martinez. The men portrayed Ponce de Leon and Hernando Cortez, and the ladies their senioritas.
In search of the fountain of youth, the conquistadors encountered sea creatures, portrayed by the children of the krewe.
Dukes and maids were introduced as Spanish soldiers, and the islands and lands that were claimed for Spain, respectively.
Representing the Island of Bermuda were Kenneth Clay Payne and Victoria Alaina Lollar, daughter of Suzette Alleman and Larry Lollar Jr. and niece of Charles Denis’ and Eva Dupont.
Serving as the Land of Florida were Lane Michael LoBue and Sarah Anne Barker, daughter of Debbie Barker and William “Bill” Barker and granddaughter of William and Melwyn Barker.
Bryan James Landry and Blair Kathryn Griffon, daughter of Kurt and Lisa Griffon and goddaughter of Michael Distefano, represented the Bahamas.
Corey Michael Clebert and Erin Elizabeth Martinez, daughter of Belinda Alleman and Clint Martinez and niece of Tammy and Huey Martinez Jr., took their bows as Cozumel.
Appearing as Jamaica were Jarid Paul LoBue and Lacey Reneé Barker, daughter of Walter and Lynette Barker and granddaughter of Melwyn and William Barker III.
Introduced as representing the Island of Puerto Rico were Troy Michael Mancuso and Kaitlin Annette Rivet, daughter of Chad and Christy Rivet.
The conquistadors’ search concluded with the discovery of the fountain of youth on a deserted island, the Island of Paradise. As a display of gratitude, the king and queen threw a royal celebration with entertainment by the MSA West Excalibur Dancers and music by The Brandon Foret Band.
