ROGERS IN ULTIMATE REIGN COMPETITION: Southern University homecoming queen Erin Rogers is among the finalists for Verizon Wireless' National Ultimate Reign Competition for 2012-2013 elected queens and kings of historically black colleges and universities.

Queens and kings submitted one- to two-minute videos about how they will use Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE technology to promote their community platforms. Contestants have the chance to win cash prizes, including a grand prize of $15,000 to support their community service initiative, a $5,000 scholarship and a Motorola technology prize pack.

Community

MILTON NAMED PEOPLES HEALTH CHAMPION: The Peoples Health Champions program honored Elizabeth "Libby" Milton, its fifth champion of the 2011-12 NFL football season, on Oct. 8 during the New Orleans Saints game against the San Diego Chargers.

A Peoples Health Champion is someone who has done something extraordinary after age 65 and who proves that excellence is achieved through experience.

In 2012, Milton, 84, completed a critical renovation to boost the health of children attending nursery school at Kingsley House. The reconstruction of the faltering air quality system at the historic New Orleans campus was a key project remaining after a $4.25 million capital improvement initiative, launched under Libby's supervision.

Military

GILL PROMOTED TO MAJOR: Myles B. Gill has been promoted to the rank of major in the U.S. Army Reserve. Gill is an operations engineer staff officer assigned to the 377th Theater Sustainment Command at Joint Reserve Base New Orleans. He has served in the military for 16 years.

He is the son of Henry and Debbie Gill, of Baton Rouge, and Keith and Irene Sunseri, of Ponchatoula. Gill graduated in 1996 from Ponchatoula High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 2001 from Southeastern Louisiana University and a master's degree in 2011 from Tulane University.

WILSON COMPLETES BASIC: Navy Airman Recruit Blake M. Wilson, son of Amy L. and Charles L. Wilson, of Denham Springs, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2012 graduate of Live Oak High School.

POLAND COMPLETES BASIC: Marine Corps Pfc. Chad M. Poland, a 2010 graduate of Dutchtown High School in Geismar, earned the title of U.S. Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

MATTHEWS COMPLETES BASIC: Navy Seaman Recruit Shelby K. Matthews, daughter of Brenda L. and Jamey G. Bertrand, of Denham Springs, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2012 graduate of Live Oak High School.
