Delta Kappa Gamma recognizes writer
Alpha Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma society of key women teachers recognized Gwenn Laviolette for her article published in The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin at the Sept. 18 meeting in Livonia.
She wrote about how mastering the English language would help people in Rwanda, where her family lived for one year. Members recognized for their years of teaching were Patsy Langlois, Fran Major, Donna Langlois, Karen Barrios, Anice McGill and Susan Collura.
Myrna Tuminello was recognized for her recent retirement, Langlois for her appointment as principal at Rougon Elementary and Brandi Chism for her new teaching position at West Feliciana High School.
Council on Aging gets Molina donation
Representatives from Molina Medicaid Solutions in Louisiana visited the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging on Aug. 21 to donate more than 100 household items — including cleaning supplies, nutritional supplements and adult diapers — to local seniors as well as $1,000 to the EBRCOA.
Dr. Cleo, Molina’s cat doctor mascot, was on hand to deliver the donated items to nearly 50 seniors. During the event, Dr. Cleo led line dancing with the senior citizens. Karl Schnur, executive account manager of Molina Medicaid Solutions in Louisiana, and six volunteers helped deliver the donated items and joined in the dancing.
The $1,000 donation went toward the EBRCOA’s Meals on Wheels program and the fan and air conditioning drive.
Bonsai Society learns grafting techniques
Allen Gautreau opened the Louisiana Bonsai Society meeting on Sept. 18 with bonsai show and tell. Members showed their bonsai and talked about what they had done to develop it, their plans for further development, and received suggestions from the group.
The main program was phoenix graft bonsai, which is done by grafting a piece of dead wood to a live plant to make the live plant appear to be old. With skill and a few years, the bonsai can look like it is hundreds of years old. Howard Merrill had two phoenix graft bonsai that have been developed into show quality for more than 10 years. He explained how he designed and development them.
Jim Scarton showed how to do a phoenix graft bonsai using a green mound juniper he bought at a local nursery and a piece from a bonsai that had died.
Bonsai expert Jim Van Landingham, of Vero Beach, Fla., will lead a bonsai improvement workshop at the Tuesday meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd. Members are preparing for the annual fall bonsai show Nov. 3-4 at the Garden Center.
