- DETAILS: The New Beginnings Mentoring Initiative, funded by the Office of Justice Programs, is now accepting mentees ages 11 to 15 and mentor advocates in Ascension Parish, East Baton Rouge Parish and the surrounding areas. The initiative’s goal is to uplift and empower young children who are vulnerable to feelings of guilt, sadness, isolation, promiscuity and other emotional problems. Mentors must be age 21 or older, have a clean criminal history, able to commit to the program for at least one year and meet other criteria. Mentees will participate in one-to-one mentoring, community service and recreational activities. Mentees can remain in the program until they are 18.
