Workshop will look at breast cancer

A free, two-part workshop on “Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer” will be available by phone or Internet from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 and Oct. 25.

Part I on Oct. 11 will look at the progress in treatment of the cancer, and Part II will focus on managing the challenging side effects of treatment. Speakers will include physicians from NYU School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

The workshop is presented by the nonprofit CancerCare, which provides free support services to anyone affected by cancer. To register, call 1-800-813-4673 or go online at http://www.cancercare.org/connect.

New dates set for
cancer study sign-up

The Baton Rouge area enrollment in a nationwide study by the American Cancer Society that was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac has been rescheduled.

The Cancer Prevention Study is the third such study in the U.S. since 1959, providing valuable information for cancer research.

People interested in participating in the study can visit http://www.cps3batonrouge.org/ to schedule their appointment at one of the following locations on these dates. They are all in Baton Rouge, except one on Oct. 26 in Addis:

Pennington to host international meet

An international conference on the causes and treatment of hyperphagia, an abnormally large appetite for food, will be held at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in October.

The second International Conference on Hyperphagia will be held Oct. 17-20, and is being presented by Pennington and the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association. Prader-Willi Syndrome is a genetic disorder that can cause hyperphagia.

The conference will feature top international scientists in the field of appetite and obesity research gathering to discuss the mechanisms and causes of the condition and the treatment options.
