Constable addresses Altrusa meeting

Baton Rouge Constable Reginald R. Brown Sr. spoke to the Altrusa Club of Baton Rouge on Aug. 20 at Drusilla Seafood Restaurant.

Brown spoke about police officers in the parish and state who recently died in the line of duty, “Operation Safe Street” and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education programs sponsored by local law enforcement agencies. Brown said drugs are at the root of most area crimes.

President Marti Didier said the club and the constable’s office have partnered in recent projects involving the donation of and placement of the American flag at Merrydale Elementary School and the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Hall and installation of a permanent flag and flag pole in the organization’s parking lot. The constable’s office has begun a flag patrol at the school, consisting of seven young students, coordinated by Sgt. Ganiyu Jimoh.

Jane St. Amant was welcomed back as a member. New member Janie Starks, sponsored by Mary Eleanor Cole, was introduced.

Giving reports were Carol Davis (treasurer), Cherryl Alford (foundation treasurer), and Jan Holmes and Lynn Nettles (service). Laura Rhorer read correspondence. Carmel Streater reported on the newsletter. Alice Carroll of the Hospitality Committee served homemade muffins.

Magnolia Mound Director John Sykes will speak to the club at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Drusilla Seafood Restaurant. For information, contact Didier, (225) 939-0460, or Nettles, (225) 752-9246.
