Assess the Need

Help children be successful in the classroom.

WHAT: Assess the Need is a parishwide school supply drive in Livingston Parish.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (drop-off).

WHERE: Wal-Mart stores in Denham Springs, Walker and Watson.

All financial contributions are tax-deductible. The project is sponsored by Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor, in partnership with area businesses and volunteers. Supplies can also be dropped off at the Assessor’s Office, 29940 Magnolia St., Livingston, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

FHL lecture

Want to learn about Baton Rouge cemeteries?

WHAT: The Foundation for Historical Louisiana hosts a lecture and book signing by author Faye Phillips.

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

WHERE: Old Governor’s Mansion, 502 North Blvd.

DETAILS: There will be refreshments by Calandro’s Select Cellars and Fine Wines at 6 p.m., followed by the lecture. Phillips, who recently retired as the associate dean of libraries at LSU, will talk about her new publication, “Baton Rouge Cemeteries: A Photographic History,” and will share pictorial highlights from the book. She is the author of three previous books about Baton Rouge. The latest one will be available for $20 at the event.

Party For A Cure

Party while you contribute to the fight against cancer.

WHAT: The American Cancer Society’s sixth annual Jamaica Me Crazy Party For A Cure.

WHEN: 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

WHERE: Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center, 201 Lafayette St.

TICKETS & INFO: $75 per person or $125 per couple. Call (225) 767-7197.

DETAILS: There will be live music by the V-Tones, a cash bar, silent auction and a tiki game room including Plinko, Wine Toss and souvenir glasses. The event, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Fraser Landreneau, will support the ACS’s mission to create a world with less cancer and a world with more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. Hosts will be Whitney Vann and Michael Marsh of WBRZ-TV.
