GOP committee has first black member

Dwayne Bailey, of Donaldsonville, was appointed to the Ascension Republican Parish Executive Committee when it met on July 10 at Faith Christian Center in Donaldsonville. He is the first African American to serve on the committee.

Bailey will hold the District 1 seat representing the western part of the parish.

Bailey has served with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Behavioral Disorders as a regional prevention coordinator. Gov. Mike Foster appointed him to the Governor’s Council of Developmental Disabilities Executive Board providing services to disabled individuals and their families statewide. Bailey is past director of the Donaldsonville Community Health Coalition, which provides health, alcohol and other drug prevention programs to teens. He has served on the Baton Rouge Community HIV/AIDS Board.

Local BSP chapter holds summer social

Laureate Alpha Gamma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its summer social on July 14 at Sandy Linder’s home. Tiki torches and flamingos decorated the yard and pool, and calypso music played in the background.

Scrapbook Chairwoman Ruth Mannen presented a scrapbook to outgoing President Virginia Huffman, who presented a Beta Sigma Phi coffee mug to Bill Mannen as the chapter’s Man of the Year. Program Chairwoman Jean Leyda presented a Program of the Year pin to Page Meyer.

Attending the social were President Phyllis Turner, Ron and Sandy Bailey, Bob and Virginia Huffman, Artie and Gail Keller, Cleve and Verlyn LeBlanc, Marilyn Mayeux, Bill and Ruth Mannen, Leyda, Linder, and guests Glenn and Cornelia Conques, Michael and Jeannie Luckett, Anne Smith, Rod Stafford, Butch and Lyn Taylor and Vickie Theriot.

Republican Women hears 3 local judges

Family Court Judges Annette Lassalle, Pam Baker and Charlene Day spoke to Capital City Republican Women on July 12 at BREC’s Independence Park. They discussed statistics and procedures regarding domestic violence and restraining orders.

Judge Lisa White joined in the conversation. City Court Judge Suzan Ponder commented on City Court handling of domestic violence. Court of Appeal Judge Jeff Hughes joined CCRW as an associate member and announced that he is running for the Louisiana Supreme Court. Oula Mawas and Debra Kuehne joined as active members.

Judge Trudy M. White announced that she is running for the Court of Appeal. Judge Toni Higginbotham from the Court of Appeal announced that she is running for the Supreme Court.
