IN THE YARD: Burden Center

The Burden Center, 4560 Essen Lane, isn’t just an inviting place to stroll when fall weather gets here, but a place to learn about gardening and landscaping.

A part of the LSU AgCenter, Burden offers opportunities for volunteers to learn about herbs, vegetables, roses and trees and share that knowledge with visitors.

If you’d rather keep a low profile, volunteer to get your hands dirty in the center’s many planting beds and greenhouses.

While they last, the Burden Horticulture Society is raising money by selling rain barrels for $75 each. The barrels collect rain water. To water the garden by gravity flow, attach a hose to the faucet at the bottom of the barrel or fill watering cans from the faucet.

Call (225) 763-3990 for more information or to volunteer with the horticultural society.

Follow the driveway from the gate off Essen Lane to the very back of Burden and discover for yourself the LSU Rural Life Museum where 19th century life in Louisiana lives in exhibits, authentic structures and through the year demonstrations of artisan crafts and agricultural techniques of the 1800s.

Call (225) 765-2437 for more information.
