Friendship Force sees Germany, Austria

Friendship Force of Baton Rouge members visited Halle, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, in June.

They arrived in Halle, a 1,200-year-old city, on June 1 for a week of sightseeing. Members visited the Semper Opera House in Dresden and St. Nikolai Church and Nikolai Column in Leipzig, where the local people held demonstrations before the collapse of East Germany, leading to the reunification of Germany. Halle officials gave a tour of the Tower of Marienkirche and later presented them with a token pouch of Halle salt. A farewell dinner was held at Pepos Kanteen in the Neustadt part of Halle.

On June 8, they traveled to Vienna, Austria. Their stay included informal dinners, boat trips on the Danube and visits to Vienna’s Prater park, and Wiener Hofburg-Orchester’s concert featuring the works of Mozart and Strauss. They had toured the Staatsoper, Vienna’s internationally known opera house. A farewell celebration was held at one of the local wine gardens.

Traveling to Germany and Austria were Bob and Gayle Duncan, Darwin and Linda Knochenmus, Thornton Cofield, Barbara Wittkopf, Betty Alford, Carole Corkern, Karen Pharis, Sheila and John Melancon, Vera Martin, Keith Corkern and JoAnn Wall. Bob Duncan was the exchange director.

La. Museum Friends holds annual meeting

Louisiana State Museum Friends held its annual meeting on June 27 at the Capitol Park Museum.

Interim Museum Director Robert Wheat welcomed guests. Carolyn Morris gave an update on the fundraiser held on June 16. Museum Division Director Bill Stark spoke about the upcoming museum activities.

Officers and board of directors were: Frances Bennett, president; Lana Venable, vice president; Denise Roussel, secretary; Derek Mathews, treasurer; Tom Bergman, Mary Kay Bertaut, Jamie Craig, Josh Dickerhoof, Rosa Dunn, Robin McAndrew, Carolyn Morris, Ben Pierce and Caryn Roland, board members.
