Friendship Force sees Germany, Austria
Friendship Force of Baton Rouge members visited Halle, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, in June.
They arrived in Halle, a 1,200-year-old city, on June 1 for a week of sightseeing. Members visited the Semper Opera House in Dresden and St. Nikolai Church and Nikolai Column in Leipzig, where the local people held demonstrations before the collapse of East Germany, leading to the reunification of Germany. On June 8, they traveled to Vienna, Austria. Their stay included informal dinners, boat trips on the Danube and visits to Vienna’s Prater park, and Wiener Hofburg-Orchester’s concert featuring the works of Mozart and Strauss. They had toured the Staatsoper, Vienna’s internationally known opera house. A farewell celebration was held at one of the local wine gardens.
Traveling to Germany and Austria were Bob and Gayle Duncan, Darwin and Linda Knochenmus, Thornton Cofield, Barbara Wittkopf, Betty Alford, Carole Corkern, Karen Pharis, Sheila and John Melancon, Vera Martin, Keith Corkern and JoAnn Wall. Bob Duncan was the exchange director.
