MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE HONORS: Two area students were honored at the Mississippi College Honors Convocation, which recognizes its top students for their academic achievements and service to the university.
Danilo Ivan Brizuela received the Dr. Charles E. Martin Memorial Award, which recognizes a senior majoring in Spanish who has exhibited exceptional ability in the language and who shows future promise in the field. He is the son of Danilo and Viviana Brizuela, of Baton Rouge.
Dana Michelle Bruno received the Administration of Justice Award, presented to an outstanding major in the specialty of political process, corrections, judicial process or criminology. She is the daughter of Carlo and Donna Bruno, of Independence.
Jeremy Michael Bertrand received the Alpha Chi Scholarship Male Athlete of the Year, presented to the junior or senior male athlete with at least a 3.5 GPA who has provided outstanding service to his athletic and academic careers at Mississippi College. He is the son of David and Susan Bertrand, of Abbeville, and is a biology/medical sciences major.
HARVEY MUDD COLLEGE GRADUATION: Noah Atwi, of Broussard, earned a bachelor of science degree in biology, graduating with distinction and departmental honors, from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., on May 13. Atwi attended Episcopal School of Acadiana.

SIMONEAUX WINS RESPIRATORY CARE AWARD: The Louisiana Society for Respiratory Care awarded its inaugural Award for Excellence to Anthony “Tony” Simoneaux at the annual educational meeting April 11-13 in Baton Rouge. Simoneaux is a staff therapist at Baton Rouge General Medical Center.
Simoneaux served in the U.S. Army for six years until being honorably discharged in 1979, then began his career in respiratory care. He is a 10-year cancer survivor and is a member of the Pierre Part Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Team as well as the Landry Domingue American Legion Post.
Simoneaux saved the life of a young man by pulling him from a bayou, performing CPR on him and instructing bystanders on what to do. Today the man is healthy and living in Pierre Part.
The Award for Excellence recognizes individuals who are members of the American Association for Respiratory Care who exhibit qualities of professionalism, leadership and care for humanity.
LOCAL WAITRESS PLACES IN HOOTERS PAGEANT: Brittany Farmer, 21, who has worked at the College Drive Hooters for four years, placed in the top 10 out of 100 contestants at the Hooters 16th annual International Swimsuit Pageant on June 23 in Miami Beach.
The Hooters Girl contestants were selected from more than 18,000 Hooters Girls who work in one of the 430 Hooters restaurants worldwide. The contestants received a spot in the pageant by competing in local swimsuit contests or were selected as the top Hooters Girl to represent their markets. Amanda Jemini, of Boca Raton, Fla., was crowned Miss Hooters International 2012.
