Entertainment will also come from singer Earl Taylor, the Krewe of Yazoo and a silent auction. Heirloom Cuisine will cater. ACACIA SHRINERS

  • DETAILS: The fishing rodeo will raise funds for the Acacia Shriners, a fraternal group that assists families of children who are younger than 18. The competition has five categories: bass, catfish, crappie, bream and trash. Each category will have first, second and third prizes. Each age group will also have first, second and third prizes, and the person with the biggest fish will get a prize as well. Contestants must be younger than 18 and are responsible for reading and understanding the competition’s rules. Registration, which is $10, is required.

SWIMSUIT DRIVE

  • DETAILS: TheCarTELL Public Relations Firm and the YMCA-BREC partnership are holding a swimsuit donation drive to give those who cannot afford swimwear a chance to go swimming. NACEL OPEN DOOR

  • DETAILS: Nacel Open Door, a nonprofit organization that promotes language development through homestays, is looking for families/couples in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and surrounding areas to host Spanish and French students. Students (ages 14-18) will be in the area for an immersion program where they will go to activities for one day and spend the rest of their time with their host families. Spanish students will begin arriving June 30, and French students will begin arriving July 7. Families/couples do not have to have a child the same age as the student, but it does help to have friends or relatives who can interact with the student.

THE GIVING QUILT

  • EVENT: Submission deadline for The Giving Quilt Inc. Biennial Show.

  • DETAILS: Those who wish to submit their quilts for The Giving Quilt Inc. Biennial Show must do so by March 22, 2013. The show will be April 6 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, Gonzales. To submit a quilt, quilters must use a recognizable amount of Timeless Treasures Basix C-5753 — multi. To get the challenge fabric, quilters can go to Borne Quilter, Bright Hopes, Cottage Creations, Lily Creek Quilt Shop, Mama’s Quilt Shop, Mes Amis, The Quilt Cupboard, The Quilting Niche and Quilt Corner. Quilt makers can win first-, second-, third- and honorable mention ribbons with first-place winners getting a cash prize. Each quilt will be donated to a charitable cause chosen by its maker.
