Pop Quiz Feb. 22, 2012
Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER: Victor Howell, 43, media coordinator for the TEAM Automotive Group, New Orleans Hornets pregame/postgame host on CST, studio host for “CST Tonight,” “Saints Tonight” and “Fantasy Football Extra” on CST.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “A lot of sports/talk radio on satellite, musically I switch channels/themes on Pandora and satellite radio. The CDs — right now in my Camry I have three discs with children’s music always ready to go for my 3-year-old, one CD made with a mix of Kenny Chesney/Sugarland/Rascal Flatts, and a Jersey Boys CD about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.”
WHAT I’M READING: “Seems like I read a different city’s newspaper every day with all the travel with the Hornets. As I’m typing this, I have the Daily Oklahoman. USA Today is a constant. More than anything, I read NBA game notes and stats, as well as auto business articles. The Internet and web apps are my friends!”
WHAT I’M WATCHING: “My morning ritual is anything Disney with my daughter. Family watching with my wife is ‘Boardwalk Empire’ (when in season) and A LOT of NBA basketball. I don’t really have a lot of time for casual TV viewing right now.”
WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “US Sports Pages, The Advocate, NOLA.com, NBA.com, and 20-25 basketball and auto websites I browse daily or, at worst, every other day. I have no real favorite but plenty to help with work; too many to list, trust me. Mediaite is a fun site to get news/sports/entertainment with different takes on reality.
WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? “Family night out getting pizza or chicken nuggets followed by yogurt cups! Nothing like seeing a 3-year-old have so much fun. I love all those moments since they don’t happen a lot in a five-month window with my travels. But for adult/me time? A good meal, great company and a smooth Crown & 7.”
BONUS QUESTION:
While everyone knows you as a sports announcer and Team Toyota spokesman, when you were a little boy, what did you want to be when you grew up and why?
“Two things. I played basketball through college. As a young boy I always said my dream was to make it to the NBA, and then I would make enough money to buy my parents an RV so they could travel the country and watch me play. Well, I took a different route, but I’ve made it to the NBA!! I’m still having to work on that RV idea, though. Ha! Secondly, a musician. I grew up in a musical family and have always said I would love to hit the stage in front of 15,000-20,000 people and just sing and perform and have fun. I’ve never seen anyone having a bad time at a concert! I had a blast singing with Kirk Holder and the band Louisiana over the last 20 plus years! I can’t thank them enough for that opportunity. I loved it every single night.”
