Miles: Players shine in LSU's first full fall scrimmage

LSU conducted its first full fall scrimmage Saturday in Tiger Stadium. The scrimmage was closed to reporters and the public.Coach Les Miles met with reporters following the event to discuss the 120-play scrimmage:

- LSU freshman running back Leonard Fournette had a “long” run on a broken play. The coach would not reveal how many total yards Fournette ran for during the scrimmage and on the play.

- Miles also kept secret each quarterback’s stats. Three touchdowns and one interception were thrown. The pick was caught by redshirt freshman safety Austin Suits during a two-minute drill.

- Miles said the quarterbacks “both played well” and that LSU threw the ball 40-45 times. Miles says he “admires” how Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris are handling the tight competition for the starting job.

- The QBs wore green no-contact jerseys as they have all fall camp and did not run much. They will not run during preseason practice. “Too close to the game,” the coach said.

- Nine different receivers caught passes. Freshman Trey Quinn caught “four to five passes,” Miles said. “He had a really nice scrimmage." Quinn carried the ball from the I-formation, Miles also said. Coaches are using Quinn throughout the field.

- Freshman receiver Malachi Dupre did not participate in the scrimmage. He’s missed several practices during fall camp while “nicked up.”

- Each of the four scholarship running backs on the roster received about 14 carries apiece. Miles did not reveal yardage.

- On defense, defensive end Danielle Hunter led the way with nine tackles, four for loss. Miles mentioned cornerback Rashard Robinson and LSU’s linebackers as having solid scrimmages.

- Miles took the ice bucket challenge for ALS. He challenged his four coordinators: recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson, defensive coordinator John Chavis, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and special team coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto.

- Defensive tackle Quentin Thomas did not participate in Saturday’s scrimmage, but he’s expected to play in LSU’s next scrimmage on Tuesday. Miles called it the “Wisconsin scrimmage.”
