Market’s Fresh Fest to celebrate tomatoes
The Red Stick Farmers Market’s Fresh Fest in downtown Baton Rouge Saturday morning will celebrate a customer favorite — the tomato. Creole and heirloom varieties as well as grape and cherry tomatoes, as well as artisan products using tomatoes such as bloody Mary mix, tomato relish, salsa and feta tomato salad dressing, will be available.
Shoppers can take a guess during the “Count the Tomato” contest for a chance to win a market prize, and the tomato theme will continue during the 10 a.m. Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration inside Main Street Market. Jimmy Le, culinary instructor at the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s ProStart High School Culinary Program at Northeast High School in Pride, and chef-owner of “The Other Chef,” will prepare a dish and a drink highlighting the tomato.
Children 2 to 12 years old are encouraged to sign up for the Red Stick Sprouts kids club at the Market Information tent each week. This Saturday, face painting will be offered for children throughout the morning. And, the Lagniappe Dulcimer Society will offer musical entertainment beginning at 8:30 a.m. inside Main Street Market.
Fresh Fest is presented by Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.
The Red Stick Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays in the parking lot of the Unitarian Church, 8470 Goodwood Boulevard, weather permitting; on Thursdays, behind Pennington Biomedical Research Center, 6400 Perkins Road, weather permitting, and on Saturdays at Fifth and Main streets.
On Saturdays, free parking is available for market shoppers in the Galvez Garage, which also serves as the market’s rain location.

Arnaud’s to host dinner for Bastille Day
Arnaud’s Restaurant will celebrate its French heritage by hosting a Bastille Day Fête at 7 p.m. July 14, which is the 225th anniversary of Bastille Day.
The New Orleans restaurant, 813 Bienville St., will celebrate French Independence Day with the wines of Louis Latour and French cuisine.
The Bastille Day Fête menu will include hors d’oeuvres of Soufflé Potatoes, Asparagus Prosciutto, Escargots and The Bastille Cup Cocktail; dinner of Pissaladière paired with Louis Latour Macon-Lugny “Les Genievres 2012;” Seared Scallop served with Marinated Mushroom Salad and Louis Latour Pouilly-Fuisse 2012; Contre Filet en Croûte de Sel with Louis Latour Marsannay 2011; and Lemon Tart with Simonnet-Febvre Cremant de Bourgogne Brut.
The menu will also feature a specialty cocktail — the Bastille Cup — created by Chris Hannah of Arnaud’s French 75 Bar. The cocktail includes Pineau De Charante, watermelon water, lime and maraschino cherry.

Praline demonstration set at French Market
Aunt Sally’s Pralines and Café Reconcile will demonstrate how to cook with pralines at 2 p.m. Sunday at the French Market Fare stage between Ursulines and Governor Nicholls streets in New Orleans’ French Market.
The free and open-to-the-public event will feature Café Reconcile staff making bread pudding stuffed with different praline flavors. Then Aunt Sally’s Pralines staff will show how to use the pralines to enhance and make a great snack.
At 2 p.m. June 29, Sarah Purcell, healthful eating educator at Whole Foods Market Broad Street will demonstrate how to prepare raw brownies by combining pecans and dried fruit to make brownies more nutritious.
