The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1914, but Father’s Day didn’t become a nationwide holiday in the United States until 1966. That’s when President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, according to the Library of Congress. President Richard Nixon made it permanent in 1972. But, that wasn’t the first time fathers were honored with their own holiday. On July 19, 1910, the governor of the state of Washington proclaimed the nation’s first “Father’s Day.” Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was raised by her father after her mother’s death during childbirth, is credited with the idea for Father’s Day. It is said she was listening to a sermon at church on Mother’s Day and thinking of all her father had done for his children. She decided fathers should have their own holiday. Because her father was born in June, she suggested churches in the Spokane area honor fathers that month. Her idea spread and people began lobbying Congress to establish Father’s Day. By 1924, President Calvin Coolidge had made it a national event to “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations,” but it took another 42 years to become a truly nationwide holiday.
