Galatoire’s introduces LSU gameday cocktail

Galatoire’s Bistro is kicking off LSU football season with a “purple and gold” happy hour from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Friday before each LSU football game. The festivities will be held in the patio and bar area of the bistro, 3535 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge.

The LSU-themed happy hour will feature a purple-and-gold cocktail, “Bengal Blueberry Lemondrop,” and complimentary passed appetizers, including Soufflé Potatoes, Cajun Boudin, Smoked Salmon Rillette and Braised Duck Spring Rolls.

During the event, guests can enter to win the “Galatoire’s Bistro Gameday Package.” The winner will receive two tickets to the LSU- Florida game on Oct. 12, a dinner for two at Galatoire’s Bistro, and transportation to and from the game.

In addition to the LSU seasonal bar celebration, the bistro hosts a happy hour all year long in the bar and patio from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Revel at RioMar pairs 3 liquors with meals

RioMar Seafood Restaurant, 800 S. Peters St., in New Orleans’ Warehouse District, is hosting three different four-course dinners, each featuring three unique liquor pairings.

A tequila dinner will be held Friday and Saturday, followed by a Pisco dinner Sept. 20-21 and a Cachaca dinner Sept. 27-28.

Guests will have the option of ordering either full tastings of the menu plus drink pairings for $73 or specific dinner items and/or cocktails a la carte.

Highlights of the tequila menu are chilaquiles and empanaditas. The Pisco dinner will feature a tuna tartare, candied pork belly and jumbo scallops; and the Cachaca menu will include cassava stew, braised rabbit thighs and thinly shaved beef with pickled vegetables and Brazilian bread.

“With the beginning of the fall season, we wanted to introduce some fresh flavors and thought why not use some interesting liquors to highlight these unique ingredients that aren’t normally seen on our menu,” Executive Chef Miles Prescott said.

Fair Grounds to hold wine-tasting event

The Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, 1751 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, continues its “Tastings at the Track” wine tasting series from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 26 in the fourth-floor clubhouse.

Held in partnership with Dorignac’s Food Center, the reception-style tasting will feature about 40 red, white and sparkling wines from top wine-producing regions.

All the wines have received a rating of 90 points or higher by respected wine publications. Samplings of gourmet cheeses and light hors d’oeuvres also will be available.

Cost to attend is $25 per person. Tickets are available at Dorignac’s, 710 Veterans Blvd., Metairie, and, if not sold out, will be available at the door. Free parking is available. Guests must be at least 21 years.

N.O. cooking school sets new classes

The New Orleans Cooking Experience is offering two new on going programs this fall. In addition to its regular Creole and Cajun class schedule of Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday lunch classes, it will offer workshop classes and Sunday brunch classes.

The hands-on workshop classes will focus on a specific subject such as frying or making gumbos and will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Cost is $165 per person.

The Sunday brunch class will be at 10 a.m. on all Sundays when there is no noon Saints game. Those classes are also $165.

Madewood set to host fall wine tasting, dinner

A fall wine tasting and dinner will be held at Madewood Plantation House, Napoleonville, on Sept. 27. The tasting will begin at 6 p.m. and the dinner at 7 p.m.

Cost is $15 per person for the wine tasting only and $45 per person with dinner. The menu will include fresh tomato salad; shrimp and okra gumbo; spicy smothered sirloin pork chops; pepper rice; and corn sweet potato pie.

Texas de Brazil holds wine, appetizer tasting

Uncork the Spirit of Giving, a special wine and appetizers tasting event featuring Santa Rita Wines, will be held at Texas de Brazil Brazilian Steakhouse in Baton Rouge’s Perkins Rowe, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 2.

Tickets are $30 per person, and $25 from each ticket will benefit American Red Cross Disaster Relief.

Metairie library to host Culinary Legacies talk

Seafood City “Doctor” Al Scramuzza, the former owner of Seafood City, will discuss his role in shaping New Orleans culinary history at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

His talk is part of the library’s Culinary Legacies series hosted by Liz Williams, founder and president of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum. The event is free and open to the public.

Scramuzza operated Seafood City, a giant supermarket of seafood that occupied an entire block at 1826 N. Broad St. in Gentilly. He was one of the first to promote and sell crawfish during the 1970s, long before dishes that included crawfish were popular, Williams said.
