‘Cooking in Central’ event to help Okla.
The city of Central’s “Cooking in Central” charity event Friday and Saturday will donate all proceeds from the sale of its crawfish and barbecue tickets to the Moore, Okla., school system for its tornado-devastated schools, a news release said.
Two Moore representatives, Kathy Knowles, principal of tornado-damaged Highland East Junior High School; and Rick Cobb, Moore school system director of curriculum, will be in Central for the “Cookin’ for Moore, OK” event. They are being flown in courtesy of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport.
In addition to food sales during the cooking event, an additional $20,000 of proceeds from the event will be directed to Moore Tornado Relief. The local Central Veterans group asked that money originally committed to help build a Veterans’ Memorial Garden be instead dedicated to Oklahoma, the release said.
Those attending the cooking event are asked to help by donating canned goods or clothing that will be sent to Moore.
Another local group, CCAF, which assists area students in need, has asked that any donations of school supplies that were intended for the Central “Stuff the Bus” campaign be redirected to Oklahoma as well.
Cooking in Central, which takes place at 10305 Blackwater Road, kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday with a 5,000-pound crawfish boil. Tickets are $15. The event opens at 10 a.m. Saturday with barbecue cook-off (tickets $10).
Polo Club Lounge hosts whiskey tour
The Polo Club Lounge, Windsor Court Hotel, 300 Gravier St., New Orleans, is hosting a “Whiskey World Tour” during June.
For $70 per person, mixologist Ryan Asay will guide guests through a special flight of five fine whiskeys from countries around the world, such as France, India, America, Scotland and Japan. The whiskey excursion will be paired with a 28-ounce bone-in Tomahawk rib-eye from The Grill Room.

Mai Tai Cocktail Hour scheduled
The Museum of the American Cocktail and the staff of Tiki Tolteca, a new pop-up tiki bar in the New Orleans French Quarter, will offer an educational tasting of the maligned tiki cocktail, the Mai Tai, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Tiki Tolteca is located above Felipe’s Taqueria, 301 N. Peters St., New Orleans,
Nathan Dalton, Danielle Maurin and Richard Odell will be behind the bar. Those attending the event will get to sample five versions of the Mai Tai and the history of each, beginning with the original recipe.

Ritz sets Father’s Day beer-pairing dinner
The Ritz-Carlton’s M bistro, 921 Canal St., New Orleans, is offering a four-course, beer-pairing dinner from Tuesday through June 16.

Cupcake demo slated at French Market
The Cupcake Fairies will demonstrate their recipe for Creole Tomato Cupcakes at 2 p.m. Sunday as part of the Creole Tomato Festival at the New Orleans’ French Market.
The demonstration, hosted by the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, will be held on the French Market Fare Demonstration Stage, between Ursulines and Governor Nicholls streets.
Books and Beasts book fair set in N.O.
The Southern Food and Beverage Museum and the Link Restaurant Group will present “Books and Beasts: A Father’s Day Picnic” from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 16 at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center on Oretha C. Haley Blvd., New Orleans. The event will benefit the SoFAB Culinary Library, which is scheduled to open later this year.
Set up as a culinary book fair, the event will feature vendors of new and used culinary-themed books, plus music from Zazou City; stage performances from The Muff-A-Lottas and the Camel Toe Lady Steppers; children’s activities; and a bake sale.
A $50 all-inclusive ticket will provide the attendee a picnic lunch from Cochon, cocktails courtesy of Southern Eagle and bites from all food vendors, including Boucherie, Café Reconcile, Cowbell, Herbsaint, Linda Green (The Yakamein Lady), Parkway Bakery, Pêche Seafood Grill and Pizza Delicious.
Tickets for children 10 and under are $10. For those unable to stay for the entire event, a $5 ticket will allow them to “pay as you go” for all of the books, food and treats available.

The SoFAB collection contains more than 9,000 cookbooks, menus, recipes, archival documents and other literature pertaining to the foods and foodways of the American South.
4-H’ers to compete
in seafood cook-off
The Great American Seafood Cook-Off, set for Aug. 4 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will include a 4-H contest for young chefs from across the country. The theme is “Sensational Seafood — The Healthy Way.”
Teams of 4-H youth in grades 9-12 are competing for a $1,000 scholarship provided by Piccadilly Restaurants, LLC, according to a news release. The competitors must show proficiency in nutrition, food safety and presentation skills. Each dish is restricted to 500 calories per serving and must feature seafood.
