Spring produce to be plentiful at market

Blueberries, bamboo shoots, fava beans, artichokes and asparagus are among the spring season produce at the Red Stick Farmers Market this Saturday.

Lili Courtney, of Delightful Palate, will combine fresh produce from the market with her line of gluten-free salad dressings and condiments at the 10 a.m. Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration in the North Street seating area of the Main Street Market.

May is Garden Month at the market, and shoppers will be able to sign up weekly for a chance to win a $15 gift certificate from one of the market’s green nurseries. The East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners will offer tips on planting a spring vegetable gardening.

Area farmers and artisan food producers scheduled to be at the farmers market from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fifth and Main streets in downtown Baton Rouge include:

The Covington Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday on the side lawn of City Hall, 609 N. Columbia St., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Wednesday at the Covington Trailhead, 419 N. New Hampshire.

Music will be provided by Pot Luck String Band at 9:30 a.m. In the cooking demonstration, market vendors Chef Joel Brown, of Winos and Tacos restaurant in Covington, will sample items from the restaurant’s menu to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Crescent City market

The Crescent City Farmers Market hosts three markets.

On Tuesday, the market is in Uptown, 200 Broadway St., New Orleans, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays find the market in Mid-City, 3700 Orleans Ave., New Orleans, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The market is downtown on Saturdays, 700 Magazine St., New Orleans, from 8 a.m. until noon.
