Kick off the new year with fresh, locally grown food at the Red Stick Farmers Market at Fifth and Main streets in Baton Rouge. In the cooking demonstration, chef Celeste Gill will create a dish using Louisiana citrus.

The Thursday Market will be open during January, weather permitting, at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, 6400 Perkins Road. Shoppers should enter off Kenilworth Boulevard, at Irene Drive.

Louisiana Purchase, credit and debit cards are accepted at both locations of the Red Stick Farmers Market.

Area farmers and artisan food producers scheduled to be at the farmers market from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday include:

Amato Winery — Native Louisiana wines.

Barrois Citrus — Louisiana citrus, including navel oranges, grapefruit and Meyer lemons.

Bocage Honey — Honey.

Briarhill Farms — Cornish hens, whole chickens, quail, Bloody Mary mix and tomato relish.

Cajun Grain — Jasmine brown rice, gluten-free rice flour, rice grits and grass-fed beef.

Chenier Farm — Kohlrabi, rutabaga, sweet potatoes, greens, mizuna, turnips, broccoli, winter squash, cauliflower, eggs and honey.

Delight Thyself — Sweet and savory pies, soups, pork grillades and crawfish pasta sauce.

Dillard Teacakes — Homemade teacakes and sweet potato pie.

Fekete Farm — Strawberries, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, kale, chard, beets, greens, bok choy, broccoli and cabbage.

Feliciana’s Best — Dairy products, including milk, cream, butter and eggs.

Feliciana Greenhouses by Jimmy Hadden — Sprouts, lettuces and salad dressings.

Fletcher Farms — Strawberries, strawberry preserves and strawberry barbecue sauce.

Forte Grove — Traditional French king cake, baguettes, a variety of artisan breads, and cookies.

Frances Chauvin Blue Ribbon Pies — Fruit pies and tarts, sugar-free tarts, quiche and shoe soles.

Glaser Family Farm — Broccoli, cauliflower, new potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage, mustard greens, green onions, parsley, collards, kale, spinach, chard and beets.

Greenhand Nursey — Herbs and winter vegetable seedlings, fruit trees.

Covington Market

The Covington Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday on the side lawn of City Hall, 609 N. Columbia St., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Wednesday at the Covington Trailhead, 419 N. New Hampshire.

Music this week will be provided by Joe Barbara beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Fresh produce will include tomatoes, shelled peas, eggplant, squash, peppers, potatoes, cucumbers, onions, assorted greens, cabbage, bok choy, salad greens, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, radishes and citrus.

Seafood, meats, dairy products, eggs, honey, herbs and prepared foods will also be available.
