Lutcher team wins gumbo cook-off

Irma Jean Stevens cooked the  first-place gumbo.

VACHERIE — The Lutcher Senior Center won the St. James Parish Senior Center’s annual gumbo cook-off, which was held Oct. 25 at the West Bank Reception Center in Vacherie. Irma Jean Stevens cooked the first-place gumbo.

Second place went to the Welcome Senior Center, and its cook was Helen Nelson.

The Romeville Senior Center was awarded third place. Its cooks were Rebecca Green, Gloria Scott and Marcella Walker.

Fourth place was awarded to the Vacherie Senior Center. Its head cook was Eve Batiste.

Judging the entries were Jude Gravois, Jessie LeBlanc, Craig Poche, Chips Black, John Habisreitinger, Pee-Wee Galloway, Tom Waters, Lynn Roussel, Harry Cifreo and Delmas Derocher.

The 250 people attending the event were served a pastalaya prepared by Motiva Enterprises retirees Delmas Durocher, Randy Tullier and Harry Cifreo.

Ingredients for the pastalaya was donated by Motiva.
