Makes about 150-170 cookies. Recipe is from Mary Michalos Webb, who says these are usually served with coffee.
1 lb. (4 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
1 whole egg and 5 egg yolks
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup orange juice
About 7 cups flour, divided
2 tsps. baking powder
1 jigger whiskey or brandy or 2 tsps. vanilla extract
1. Beat butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add sugar until well blended. Blend in the whole egg and then blend in the yolks one at a time.
2. Add baking soda to the orange juice, then blend into the butter-sugar mixture.
3. Sift 2 cups flour with baking powder and add to batter, then add remainder of flour a little at a time until the dough is no longer sticky. Put the dough into the refrigerator to cool for a while to make it easier to roll the cookies.
4. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into a tube shape about 6 inches long and about wthick. Fold in half and twist or into desired shape. Mix egg yolk with milk and brush tops of cookies. Bake in preheated 350-degree oven for 14-17 minutes, or until lightly browned.
