Nov 23, 2013 08:27 No services: 2 churches set ‘Be the Church Sunday’ No services: 2 churches set ‘Be the Church Sunday’ Advocate staff report Nov. 23, 2013 Comments Two south Baton Rouge churches are dismissing regular Sunday morning services on Oct. 20 to serve their communities in “Be the Church Sunday.” Faith Presbyterian Church and River Oaks Baptist Church, both on Old Hammond Highway, plan to perform a variety of services, including making and distributing recycled plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. Other projects include removal of graffiti from buildings, handing out water at a park, conducting a worship service at an area nursing home and volunteering at the neighborhood elementary public school. “Instead of our traditional worship services, we want to ‘be the church’ and use our hands and feet to reach out to our community,” said Buck Hughes, pastor of River Oaks. “Our congregations are crossing denominational lines to minister to those in need,” added John Blewitt, pastor of Faith Presbyterian. Other congregations and volunteers are invited to “Be the Church” and help with the projects. Volunteers must register no later than Monday, Oct. 14, and meet at Faith Presbyterian, 128555 Old Hammond Highway, for breakfast at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. Lunch will be served for volunteers at 1 p.m. at River Oaks, 14969 Old Hammond Highway. For more details or to register individual or groups contact, Blewitt at (225) 275-7373 or Hughes at (225) 454-8138.
