The national CBF organization has programs in the 10 poorest counties in the United States. In 2001, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship began the Together for Hope project to help people in 20 of the nation’s poorest counties. The group’s website said, “The ministry is about establishing long-term relationships, listening, learning and walking alongside local leaders. The hope is that communities will be transformed as will the churches and individuals who serve in focal counties.” Louisiana has one of those counties: East Carroll Parish, which was the nation’s second-poorest county (or parish) at the time. Jenny Hodge is a CBF missionary working in East Carroll and Tensas parishes. “Panola Pepper Co. is a family-owned business in Lake Providence, La. (the parish seat for East Carroll). The family was originally a pepper farm, but several years ago they wanted to offer year-round employment to their seasonal farm workers,” Hodge said. “Thus, the Panola Pepper Co. was born. They are completely based in Lake Providence, but their products are sold throughout the United States,” Hodge said. CBF and Panola joined forces recently, Hodge said. “A year ago, Together for Hope approached Panola about bottling ‘Together for Hope Hot Sauce’ — using Panola’s original hot sauce recipe with our logo on the label. They agreed and Together for Hope Hot Sauce was born. The hot sauce is both a fundraiser for us and an opportunity to support a locally owned business that contributes greatly to the Lake Providence community.” Hodge said that anyone wishing to purchase Together for Hope hot sauce can contact her at (318) 418-5133 or email@example.com. Each bottle is $6, two bottles are $10 and a case of 12 bottles is $60.
