State Police book man in fatality; had listed wrong man as driver

State Police on Saturday said they reported the wrong person as the driver of a pickup truck that crashed earlier this month, killing a man.

The crash at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6 on La. 97 near Barwick Road killed Joseph Joseph II. The Chevrolet veered off the road to the left, rolled over and landed on its roof.

Both Joseph, 42, and 34-year-old Eric Bergeaux, Basile, were thrown from the truck. Neither wore seat belts, State Police said.

State Police now say Bergeaux, who survived the wreck, was driving, not Joseph, as investigators first thought, Master Trooper Brooks David said Saturday in a news release.

Bergeaux was impaired at the time of the crash, based on a toxicology sample taken from him the night of the crash, the release said.

Troopers arrested Bergeaux Friday and booked him into the Acadia Parish Jail on counts of vehicular homicide, obstruction of justice, improper lane usage, speeding, no seat belt and reckless operation.
