Dr. John tribute slated at Saenger

Dr. John, the six-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee from New Orleans, will be celebrated during an all-star concert Saturday, May 3, at the Saenger Theatre.

Announced performers for “The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music” include Gregg Allman, Mavis Staples, Allen Toussaint, Widespread Panic, Ryan Bingham, Lucinda Williams, George Porter Jr., Cyril Neville, Zigaboo Modeliste, Jimmie Vaughan, Irma Thomas, Tab Benoit, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Bill Kreutzmann, Chuck Leavell, Shannon McNally, Sarah Morrow and Anders Osborne.

Dr. John will perform with a number of special guests throughout the concert.

Grammy-winner Don Was will lead the all-star band and serve as the concert’s musical director.

“Dr. John transcends genres with a truly distinctive sound that embodies the rich musical heritage of New Orleans and has tremendously influenced the course of music history,” Was said in a statement.

Tickets for the show will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10.

They’re available from Ticketmaster.com and the Saenger Theatre box office at www.saengernola.com. The Saenger Theatre box office is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets can also be charged by phone at 800-745-3000. A percentage of proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic.
