Museum brings out toys for the holidays

The LSU Museum of Art’s annual holiday exhibit of antique toys will run through Jan. 31, 2013, at the museum in the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100 Lafayette St.

This year’s show is titled Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, and features a display of vintage and antique toys and fine art, from a 1930s Lionel train set to a miniature model of a double-decker bus.

These toys offer imaginative escapes for children and adults alike. Objects of fine art will also be showcased in this holiday-themed exhibition.

Since the 1960s, the LSU Museum of Art has maintained the tradition of showcasing vintage and antique toys during the holiday season. Once located in the Memorial Tower on the LSU campus, the museum recognized that many Baton Rouge families began their holiday tradition by viewing its toy display and has since continued this tradition at its current location within the Shaw Center for the Arts.

This exhibition is presented by Brian Harris Audi, Union Pacific, E. John Bullard and Charles E. Schwing, and events that coincide with the show will be the Museum Store Holiday Trunk Show, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30; Free First Sunday, when admission is free, Sunday, Dec. 2; the Penny Edwards: Pennimo Signature Collection Trunk Show, 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6; Family Day at the Shaw Center, featuring free admission, 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20; Museum After Dark: Young Professionals Night, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20.
