EBR Library to host Attic Treasures program

Local and regional collection specialists will identify and evaluate heirlooms, collectibles and treasures at the 12th annual Attic Treasures program 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Greenwell Springs Road Regional branch, 11300 Greenwell Springs Road. Knowledgeable specialists in ceramics, coins, jewelry, paintings, pottery, Civil War artifacts, antique tools, paper, books, small furniture and vintage items will be available to help identify and evaluate items for patrons.

Brandi Schaeffer, an instructor of Baby Signs, will present a sign, say and storytime for parents and their babies, from birth to 3 years at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Main branch, 7711 Goodwood Blvd. Schaeffer’s Baby Signs and Baby Signs Bear will read stories, teach signs and sing songs. The Baton Rouge Police Mounted Patrol Unit will provide a demonstration of their day-to-day activities at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Jones Creek Regional branch, 6222 Jones Creek Road. The Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life Book Discussion Group meets monthly to talk about the book by Karen Armstrong. Livingston Parish Library

Wings of Hope founder Leslie Lattimore will show several live birds and talk about how the Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary saves local animals at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the South branch, 23477 La. 444 in Livingston. Young Writers Club meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Denham Springs-Walker branch, 8101 U.S. 190 in Denham Springs. The club is open to anyone between the ages of 10 and 17. Its shared goal is to write for both publication and performance. Young writers are encouraged to explore their writing interests and develop their voice and style through exciting collaborative activities. Ascension Parish Library

Have you ever wanted to learn sign language, or have you ever wanted to teach it to your child? Sign Time, at the Ascension Parish Library, will be a very special Storytime presented with American Sign Language. You and your child will learn the signs for popular songs and rhymes such as “The More We Get Together,” “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” and “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.” Stories will be interspersed with signs so you can learn a few words that way as well. Lafayette Public Library

Alain Simon will discuss the vanishing Cajun healing traiteur traditions that have been handed down through the centuries 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at South Regional branch, 6101 Johnston St. in Lafayette. Simon will share his personal experience as a traiteur in Acadiana and the history of this folk healing tradition. This event presented as part of the Louisiana Bicentennial Program Series.

Patrons can support the Lafayette Public Library by shopping at the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Gently used hardcover and paperbook books will be sold by the inch. Orleans Parish Library

Human Trafficking 101, a presentation by Lindsey Boettinger, Office of Catholic Charities Refugee Services, will take place 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Rosa Keller Public Library and Community Center, 4300 S. Broad St. in New Orleans. Boettinger will discus what human trafficking is, and why it’s often described as human exploitation and modern day slavery and is currently the world’s second-most profitable crime. Yet its victims often go unnoticed, Boettinger says. She is a case worker and outreach professional with Catholic Charities Refugee Services, and will speak about what defines human trafficking and what forms it takes in the Greater New Orleans area, the United States and the global level. After her presentation, Boettinger will lead a discussion on how the community can join the fight against this crime.

Think Outside the Box: Encouraging creative arts exploration through reading, engaging discussions, and group activities is a writing group for youth led by youth. Reading series

The Diane Tapes Reading Series, a monthly reading series hosted by Ben Kopel and Anne Marie Rooney, will have its first event 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Maple Street Book Shop at Bayou St. John, 3141 Ponce de Leon in New Orleans.

Ben Pelhan is a Pittsburghist living in New Orleans. He makes poems, screenplays, videos, and combinations of poems, screenplays, and videos. His work is available or forthcoming at OH NO, Spork, Fairy Tale Review, Diagram and YouTube. He likes most rivers, most movies, and most of the people he knows.

Lara Glenum, Fullbright Fellow and NEA Translation Fellow, is the author of The Hounds of No and Maximum Gaga. Glenum’s writing pushes the boundaries of gender politics and poetics through the use of the sublime and the grotesque.

She is also the co-editor (with Arielle Greenberg) of the anthology Gurlesque, which promotes a re-imagined feminist aesthetic, which blurs the boundaries between femininity, burlesque, and the grotesque.

Kristin Sanders is the author of the chapbook Orthorexia (dancing girl press). Her writing has appeared in places like Octopus, elimae, Strange Machine, HTMLGIANT, and Airplane Reading. Originally from California, she teaches at Loyola University, New Orleans, where she is the associate poetry editor at the New Orleans Review.

Writers’ Group

Barnes & Noble Westbank, Westbank Centre, 1601B West Bank Expressway, Harvey, is hosting a Writers’ Group 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18. This is a networking and critiquing forum for writers of all skill levels. Be prepared to read what you are working on, to take constructive criticism and to give it. The group meets every Tuesday.
