Library presenting cheesy program

Chuck Boeneke from the LSU Diary Science Department will present a movie about cheese-making at two branch libraries this week. Children ages 5-11 are invited to the Library to see his live demonstration and hear the book The Stinky Cheese Man by Jon Scieska. This program is sure to be cheesy, but in this case that’s a good thing. The volunteers of the Pride Volunteer Fire Department will present a program on fire safety at 10 a.m. Monday, June 18, at the Pride-Chaneyville Branch, 13600 Pride-Port Hudson Road. Children ages 5-11 will view a fire truck used to put out fires and learn about the role firemen play. For more information or to register, call (225) 658-1560.

Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life Book Discussion Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at the Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Blvd. The group meets monthly to discussion Karen Armstrong’s Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life, which focuses on instilling the Golden Rule in a secular way in everyday life. This month’s meeting will cover steps 4 and 5. For more information, call (225) 231-3710.

Children ages 5-11 are invited to the Baker branch, 3501 Groom Road, at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 16, to hear Why Do Dogs Bark? by Joan Holub and to visit with the LSU Tiger Hats and therapy dogs. Children will be able to read a story to these specially trained dogs. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult or responsible teen. Members of the audience can join in with homemade instruments as Ms. Dorothy and her Shaky Egg Band perform classics, popular rock songs, and some original music. Kids can make an instrument to take home after the show. For all ages.

Calling all young writers! The Denham Springs-Walker Branch of the Livingston Parish Library’s Young Writers Club meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Denham Springs-Walker branch, 8101 U.S. 190 in Denham Springs. Open to anyone between the ages of 10 and 17, the goal of the club is to write for both publication and performance. Young writers are encouraged to explore their writing interests and develop their voice and style through exciting collaborative activities. Lafayette Public Library

Dr. Michael Martin, director of the Center for Louisiana History and managing editor of Louisiana History at UL Lafayette, will present an overview of Louisiana in 1812 that will give a political, social, economic, and demographic snapshot of the state during that time. Martin will also compare Louisiana to other Southern states during that period.

The presentation is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at South Regional branch, 6101 Johnston St. in Lafayette, and at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at North Regional Library, 5101 N. University Ave. in Carencro.

The Lafayette Genealogical Society will meet 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, at South Regional branch, 6101 Johnston St. in Lafayette. The group holds monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month. Each meeting features a guest speaker. Anyone interested in genealogy may attend.

Read Across America

Upland Avenue Productions has partnered with Read Across America and Barnes & Noble to get the word out about the importance of children’s literacy and the effectiveness of eReaders.

The National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America is a year-round literacy project that encourages readers, both young and old, to celebrate reading.

Bring your children to Barnes & Noble Perkins Rowe, 7707 Bluebonnet Blvd. Ste. 100, 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 18, for two hours of readings and information that promote reading literacy.

HeartLa meeting

HeartLa, the Baton Rouge Chapter of Romance Writers of America, will hold its monthly meeting from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 23, at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library Bluebonnet branch, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd.

Membership is open to writers of all genres. Guests may attend two meetings before joining.
