‘Skyrim’ a true masterpiece

It has been two hundred years since the events in "Oblivion," the previous "Elder Scrolls" game. Civil war is in the air and the land is in dire need of a hero. Will you be the one to right the wrongs in "Skyrim?"

"Skyrim" is an open-world, single-player role-playing game (RPG) that allows the player to construct a character in the game world and then proceed to become a part of it. You start the game as a prisoner, captured for doing who-knows-what by the Empire. As the story unfolds, you will have many opportunities to choose how the game progresses. This will essentially give you enormous choices for character individualization.

Early on, you are given a choice on skill sets to focus on via three stones—the Warrior stone, the Thieves stone and the Mage stone. While all skills will increase if you use them, focused skills will increase at a faster rate. You can choose a different stone at any time, allowing you to customize your character and use the skills that fit what you want for your character instead of predetermined character classes.

The game boasts stunning visuals with some of the most breathtaking scenery in any game to date. If this beautiful eye candy isn’t enough, all the characters in "Skyrim" are fully voice-acted, which draws the player in even more to this hard, frozen land.

It should be noted, however, that there are a few issues with the interface and the mouse controls for PC use. For some users, the mouse is very lethargic, especially in the menu screen. Also, it can be a bit annoying clicking on various dialog options, including the text in the sell menu. The menus sometimes close during selling and during dialog, which causes you to click on options you have already spoken about. Bethesda has already rolled out two patches, so an additional patch will no doubt be forthcoming to alleviate those issues.

Even with its minor glitches, "Skyrim" is still a fantastic game. With such a huge open world to explore and countless adventures to be had, this game truly is a masterpiece that every gamer needs to have on their Christmas list this year.
