Concert Band to mark bicentennial

The Baton Rouge Concert Band’s Fall 2012 concert will commemorate the Louisiana Bicentennial with a lineup of music celebrating the state’s history and culture.

The concert, titled “Louisiana! A Musical Celebration,” will be performed at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, in the First Presbyterian Church, 763 North Blvd. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

Musical selections are drawn from the various nations whose flags have flown over the state. These includes Spain, France and England.

These and other selections include music that defines Louisiana’s culture.

The selections are “Ave Maria,” celebrating Christian heritage; “At a Dixieland Jazz Funeral,” celebrating New Orleans; “Cajun Folk Songs II,” celebrating the Cajun influence and lifestyle; “Marche Militaire Francais,” celebrating French influence; “Promising Skies,” for the story of Katrina from devastation to recovery; “Sol Y Sombra,” celebrating Spanish influence; “Symphonic Dances No. 2 and No. 3,” celebrating the influence of LSU’s music department; “Tuba Tiger Rag,” celebrating Dixieland jazz; and “When the Stars Began to Fall,” celebrating gospel music.
