EBR Library Bluebonnet branch offers two genealogy webinars

If you’re interested in genealogy and getting deeper with your research, join the East Baton Rouge Library staff at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch, 9200 Bluebonnet Blvd., for two “webinars” focusing on specialized genealogy topics. The hour-long webinar “Genealogy Orienteering” with George G. Morgan will be presented at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. “All about the Census” with George G. Morgan will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. Each webinar will be archived for later viewing.

Children ages 8-12 will write a series of very short stories (called flash fiction) and poetry using props and photos at the Baker branch, 3501 Groom Road, at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. For more information or to register, call [phone].

Book clubs:

•  Mystery Lovers Book Club will meet at noon Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Main branch, 7711 Goodwood Blvd. Members will discuss “mystery of sports.”
•  Scotlandville Book Club will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Scotlandville branch, 7373 Scenic Highway. Members will discuss The Soloist by Steve Lopez.
•  Teens can come to the Central branch, 11260 Joor Road, at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, to the Teen Book Club to listen to book talks about books they may have missed, and discuss the books they’ve read since the last meeting. For more information or to register, call [phone].

Livingston Parish Library

Livingston Parish Library staff encourages young patrons to vote for their favorite book in the Louisiana Young Readers’ Choice Awards. All participants have to do is stop by any of the library’s five branches and pick up the list of nominated books. Read any three books on the list and vote for your favorites online, through participating schools, or at any of the library branches. Cast your vote by Feb. 1, 2013.

The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books. The Civil War: War on the Home Front will be offered 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Albany-Springfield branch, 26941 La. 43, Hammond. This program is held in conjunction with the Civil War Re-enactment in Springfield. Cody Scallions will give a presentation of what home life was like during the Civil War.

Also, actors from the re-enactment will be in period dress to give a demonstration of how people dressed during the Civil War.

Wings of Hope founder Leslie Lattimore will show several live birds and talk about how the Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary saves local animals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Watson branch, 36581 Outback Road, Denham Springs.

The presentation will also focus on what to do if you find an injured animal. Donations of supplies are requested.

Main Branch Book Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Main branch, 20390 Iowa St. in Livingston. Members will discuss The Night Circus by Erin Morganstein.

Sunny Side Up Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Watson branch, 36581 Outback Road in Denham Springs. Members will discuss Sticks and Stones by Susan Meissner.

Ascension Parish Library

From the familiar storefronts along bustling Railroad Avenue to the beautiful homes that line the streets of its Historic District, Donaldsonville is rich with memories and has a unique culture all its own. It’s the people and places in the city that make it a place called home. Ascension Parish Library celebrates Donaldsonville’s history with A Trip Down Memory Lane, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Donaldsonville branch, 500 Mississippi St. in Donaldsonville. Writers’ Group

Barnes & Noble Westbank, 1601B West Bank Expressway in Harvey, is hosting a writers’ group 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. This is a networking and critiquing forum for writers of all skill levels. Be prepared to read what you are working on, to take constructive criticism and to give it.

Louisiana SCBWI meeting

Black Widow Salon will hold its annual Lafcadio Hearn Tribute 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, upstairs at Crescent City Books, 230 Chartres St. in New Orleans. Special guest readers include Priestess Miriam Chimani from the Voodoo Spiritual Temple reading about Marie Laveau and All Saints’ Day, Burlesque doyenne Trixie Minx reading about NOLA glamour, and historian/author/playwright Rob Florence reading from Hearn’s Chita.
