Enjoy sound effects, a reading pig, music and books at library events

Charlie the Noise Guy will present 13 programs, one at each East Baton Rouge Parish Library branch for Children’s Services.

Charlie Williams, “the man of 1,000 sound effects,” takes a new approach to storytelling with his vocal aerobics, telling traditional and not-so-traditional stories in an energetic, fun new way. Farmer Minor will tell stories about Daisy the Pig’s formative years (all true) with Farmer & Mrs. Minor, as well as share many of her favorite pig books when he and Daisy visit the Baker branch, 3501 Groom Road, at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7.

Daisy probably has the world’s largest collection of “pig books. Daisy is the “most famous pig in the whole world!”

Mike Artell, award-winning children’s book author, illustrator and television cartoonist will present 13 programs about science, language arts, cultural diversity, thinking skills, cartooning and music, one at each East Baton Rouge Parish Library branch for Children’s Services.

Artell begins his programs by engaging kids in some language arts wordplay, and then he shares information about Cajun culture and reads from his Cajun parodies of classic folk tales.

Artell will also give children step-by-step instructions for creating their own original cartoons while showing them how to think more creatively by using higher order thinking skills exercises.

Judy Whitney-Davis will visit the Greenwell Springs Road Regional branch, 11300 Greenwell Springs Road, at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7. Miss Judy the Storyteller will present the history of the Juneteenth Celebration to children ages 6 and older. Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States and is celebrated on June 19 of every year.

Livingston Parish Library

Singer and songwriter Johnette Downing will perform original music for children at the Livingston branch, 20390 Iowa St. in Livingston, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, and the Albany-Springfield branch, 26941 La. 43, Hammond, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5. Downing will be at the Denham Springs-Walker branch, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, and at the Watson branch at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6. The Livingston Parish Library Night Photography Contest winners will be announced at special events at four branches. Young Writers Club will meet 5-6 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Denham Springs-Walker branch, 8101 U.S. 190 in Denham Springs. Young Writers Club is open to anyone between the ages of 10 and 17.

The goal of the club is to write for both publication and performance. Young writers are encouraged to explore their writing interests and develop their voice and style through exciting collaborative activities.

Adult Writers Circle will meet 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Denham Springs-Walker branch, 8101 U.S. 190 in Denham Springs. Are you a writer who is looking for some feedback? Then come to the Writers Circle. Published and unpublished adult writers of fiction or nonfiction for adults, young adults, or children are welcome.

The group provides a forum for sharing writing, a venue for learning more about the writing craft and information about publishing and self-publishing.
