Ian Carney is the son of longtime Ballet Hysell choreographer Diane Carney. Eleanor Carney is a dancer and educator with Hollywood-based Tremaine Dance Conventions & Competitions. Another of Diane Carney’s sons, Devon, is the associate artistic director with the Cincinnati Ballet. Ballet Hysell was founded by the late Harvey Hysell in 1969. He was the first American male to receive a bachelor of fine arts degree in ballet in 1960 from Texas Christian University. His papers and memorabilia are the subject of an exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection. Taylor trained locally at the Giacobbe Academy of Dance and has been a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet since 2005. Delta Festival Ballet has performed The Nutcracker in the New Orleans area continuously since 1981. DFB was founded in 1969 by the brother and sister team Joseph and Maria Giacobbe. Their family established the Giacobbe Academy of Dance in 1943. DFB is Louisiana’s largest resident, professional dance company. The company includes both a school and a pre-professional company, the New Orleans Youth Ballet. The collaboration between DFB and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra dates back to 1976 when LPO was known as the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony. DFB has a repertoire of more than 50 ballets ranging from 19th-century classics to popular rock ballets, and Joseph Giacobbe choreographed over 40 productions for the New Orleans Opera Association since 1967.
